NGS, with over 30 years of experience in manufacturing electronic products and headquartered in Spain, is entering a new phase. They have adopted a philosophical shift in their approach to product development, prioritizing a more localized perspective and placing design at the heart of their process. Consequently, they enlisted our help to redesign one of their best-selling products, the Dew.

The project’s goal was to develop a new model of wireless mouse with two key aspects: controlling costs to capture a broad market share and making it ambidextrous to cater to both left-handed and right-handed users.

User Analysis – The process began with an extensive market study, focusing on identifying the products that the new model would compete with. Next, to guide the ideation process, we identified and studied the mice used by people in our surroundings to understand what type of mouse they used and what issues arose from their usage. Most people used “travel” mice, which are lightweight, wireless, and small. Regarding usage, we identified that, besides the click areas, the sides experienced significant wear due to thumb support. With the premise of extending the mouse’s lifespan and reducing the visual impact of wear, we designed a low-relief pattern that breaks up the surface of the wheel and both sides, adapting it to the mouse’s profile lines.

User Experience – As well as being a small and lightweight travel mouse, it features a high enough support point to relieve the wrist and an ideal size for carrying in a bag or backpack. Dew offers a pleasant and simple visual language, making it friendly both to the touch and to the eye. For portability, the mouse needed to be wireless and feature a nano receiver. Additionally, it kept the distinctive top “DPI” button from its predecessor, allowing users to adjust the pointer movement sensitivity.

CMF Design – Color, Finish, Material. With a focus on the manufacturing cost forecasts provided by NGS, we developed Dew using a single plastic material and the fewest number of parts possible. All pieces, except for the “DPI” button, feature a matte finish with a controlled mould texture.
